The USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience brings together a diverse group of scientists and engineers from the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, Keck School of Medicine and Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences to solve some of the greatest challenges of the 21st century – including neurological disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
The mission of the center is to accelerate the detection, identification, and cure of diseases. Through close collaboration between world-renowned scientists across multiple disciplines –– from chemistry and computer science to biological science, neuroscience, engineering and physics –– these teams aim to catalyze breakthroughs in research and development both at USC and around the globe. While their methods may differ, these experts share the goal of creating a new model for the development of precision medicine and to offer a path for fast-tracking new cures, drug therapies, biomedical devices and technologies.
The Next Frontier
The USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience was established with a $50 million donation from Dr. Gary Michelson and his wife, Alya Michelson. The center provides a way for some of the most talented students, faculty, and field experts to influence the course of biomedicine and scientific discovery for years to come.
At the center, ambitious research teams proudly to forge a path on the next frontier in health and medicine. The transformative model of cross-disciplinary collaboration is already spurring the development of impactful, life-saving therapies and technologies.
A New Approach
The USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience enables the coming together of science and engineering, effectively tearing down the walls which once kept experts in these different fields separated in order to learn from one another and discover new ways to fight disease. By thinking differently about the way in which research is conducted and who is involved, the center aims to find cures for the toughest health issues we face.
Catalyzed by the genome revolution, recent advances in the understanding of living systems paired with incredible improvements in computing technology have created an opportunity for humanity to make giant leaps forward in the biological sciences.
By working together, Interdisciplinary teams, including faculty and students, will not only find solutions to our existing challenges, but break barriers and forge new frontiers in medicine and health to develop new life-saving devices and therapeutics.
