The Michelson Medical Research Foundation
Founded in 1995 by Dr. Gary Michelson, The Michelson Medical Research Foundation (MMRF) seeks to improve upon existing treatments and develop groundbreaking new medical technologies through investments in ethical, progressive medical research and education.
At MMRF, we foster opportunities for innovative, cross-disciplinary medical research, education and entrepreneurial resources through respective partnerships with the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience located at the University of Southern California, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the Wharton School's Startup Challenge, and UW's Institute for Protein Design.
Since its inception, the Michelson Medical Research Foundation has been driven by our mission to support forward thinking endeavors in medical science. We form alliances with institutions advancing innovative research, such as the Human Vaccines Project, and promote the development of disruptive technologies in immunology to combat against current and future global diseases.
Dr. Michelson’s determination to have a positive impact on our world drives The Michelson Medical Research Foundation and its wide-ranging portfolio of ambitious projects and initiatives:
Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience at USC
In 2015, the MMRF made a $50 million donation to the University of Southern California. The donation helped to establish the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience and The Bridge@USC, its interim campus. The center’s goal is to create opportunities for experts across multiple disciplines to collaborate in an effort to generate more innovative research in the field of Bioscience.
Michelson Ethical Research & Education
Through an exciting partnership between the MMRF and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, The Michelson Ethical Research & Education Initiative strives to make medical research and education more ethical and more effective. An important goal of this initiative is to end the suffering and exploitation of animals for the purposes of experimentation through the development of innovative alternatives.
Michelson Entrepreneurship Award [Wharton]
Michelson Medical Research Foundation has a longstanding history of supporting technological and business innovation at the nation’s top universities. With over $350K in prizes distributed to aspiring entrepreneurs, the foundation has encouraged collaboration between student entrepreneurs and seasoned mentors at both graduate and postgraduate levels. Since 2009, MMRF has been a platinum sponsor of the Wharton Startup Challenge. MMRF is also a former sponsor of the Business Association of Stanford Entrepreneurial Students and the MIT $100k Entrepreneurship Competition.
Institute for Protein Design [UW]
Proteins are to thank for helping us overcome challenges faced throughout the course of evolution, however, these proteins took billions of years to reach the state in which they exist today. At the Institute for Protein Design, our goal is to synthesize new proteins to help us solve for new challenges we face in the modern world.
Michelson Prizes for Human Immunology and Vaccine Research [HVP]
Tackling some of the world’s most dangerous diseases requires disruptive technologies, outside-of-the-box thinking, and inventive research concepts. By funding a $20 million initiative, Michelson Medical Research Foundation has teamed with the Human Vaccines Project to support young investigators who are determined to advance the development of future immunological therapies and vaccines.
