IP Education Resources | Michelson Institute for Intellectual Property (MIIP)
The Intangible Advantage is the first intellectual property (IP) book for everyday people. In book, course, and video formats, The Intangible Advantage is intended for innovators, legal professionals, and educators alike; its purpose is to make patents, copyrights, and trademarks easy for anyone to understand.
Gary K. Michelson, M.D., is the publisher and a contributing author to The Intangible Advantage. A distinguished Board Certified Orthopedic Spinal Surgeon, Dr. Michelson has devoted his life to helping others. Moreover, he is medicine’s most prolific inventor, and the solely named inventor of more than 950 issued patents worldwide. Dr. Michelson was inducted into both the National Academy of Inventors and the National Inventors Hall of Fame. On behalf of independent inventors, Dr. Michelson and many others worked to help shape, and ultimately to have passed, the America Invents Act of 2011. In 2011 President Obama invited Dr. Michelson to attend the signing of the Act, a historical legislation.
David Kappos is one of the world’s foremost leaders in the field of intellectual property (IP), and the Executive Editor of The Intangible Advantage. His specialties include the development of global intellectual property (IP) norms, intellectual property (IP) management and strategy, as well as commercialization and enforcement of innovation‑based assets. From August 2009 to January 2013, Mr. Kappos advised the President, Secretary of Commerce and the Administration on intellectual property (IP) policy matters. As Director of the USPTO, he led the Agency in dramatically reengineering its entire management and operational systems as well as its engagement with the global innovation community. He was key in the passage and implementation of the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act, signed into law by President Obama in September of 2011. The American Invents Act of 2011 was the greatest legislative reform of the U.S. patent system in generations.
Author of The Intangible Advantage, David Kline, is a Pulitzer-Prize-nominated journalist who has covered some of the world’s most important stories over the last 30 years for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, Rolling Stone, the Atlantic, Harvard Business Review, CBS and NBC TV, and other national media. He was also a contributing writer for Wired magazine for many years. More recently, Kline has written on a variety of business and technology topics, with a special focus on intellectual property (IP) issues. His bestselling book Rembrandts in the Attic from Harvard Business Press is considered the seminal work on patent strategy within corporate America, helping to shape the direction of corporate and policy-maker views on patent issues. In 2016, Kline was named one of the “World’s Top 300 Intellectual Property (IP) Strategists” by Intellectual Asset Management magazine.
